From salary to hourly wage

The starting point is always the annual figure. From a monthly payment you get the year by multiplying by the number of payments; from there the hourly wage is the annual figure divided by the hours paid: 40 hours for 52 weeks makes 2080 hours, so a 45,000 salary is about 21.63 an hour.

In Italy, Spain, Portugal and Brazil salaries are often paid in 13 or 14 instalments. Extra months do not raise the hourly wage, they split the same year differently: the same annual salary divided into 14 payments gives lighter payslips. To compare two offers, look at the annual figure or the 12-month average.

The calculation works for gross and net pay alike, as long as you stay consistent: taxes and contributions vary by country and are not proportional, so the net hourly wage cannot be found by applying one percentage to every period.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the monthly payment by 12 when the contract pays 13 or 14.
  • Counting paid holiday weeks as unpaid: it underestimates the hourly wage.
  • Comparing a gross figure with a net one: check both amounts are the same kind first.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are there in a year?

With 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, 2080. Paid holiday is part of those hours: you work less but are paid the same.

What is 50,000 a year per hour?

With 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, 50,000 / 2080 ≈ 24.04 an hour.

How do I get the hourly wage from a monthly salary?

Monthly payment × number of payments ÷ (weekly hours × paid weeks). With 3000 over 12 payments and 40 hours: 36,000 ÷ 2080 ≈ 17.31 an hour.

How this calculation works

Annual = monthly payment × number of payments, or weekly × weeks, daily × days × weeks, hourly × hours × weeks. From the annual figure: monthly payment = annual / payments, weekly = annual / weeks, daily = weekly / days, hourly = weekly / hours.
